More than 100 pupils from St Albans School’s Combined Cadet Force braved the wind and rain to battle through the annual winter camp at Mereworth Woods in Kent.

The boys and girls were joined by a contingent from the Malborough Science Academy and had their first real opportunity to put their training into practice.

Led by Bill Wilson, the school sergeant major, the cadets were split to allow the seniors to practice a range of different battlecraft techniques, including platoon attacks, pairs fire and manoeuvre.

Commanding Officer Major Kenny Everitt, said: “It was especially rewarding to be joined by cadets from the Marlborough Science Academy and their officers, with whom we have been working throughout the year.

“The Marlborough cadets and officers brought a level of commitment, enthusiasm and energy giving an extra dimension and perspective to the experience.

“They were not only a great credit to their own school, but also proof of the benefit of independent and state schools working together, to the advantage of all.”

St Albans School and the Marlborough Science Academy began working together in 2015 with 15 boys and girls joining the junior corps for training every Friday.
