The Tourist Information Centre in St Albans will be moving to the Alban Arena next month.

The centre is being relocated while the Town Hall, where is currently housed, is converted into a £7.75 million museum and art gallery.

The Tourist Information Centre will shut on Thursday, March 24 and is scheduled to re-open at its new site on Monday, April 4.

Flags that fly from the Town Hall, including the Union Jack and the St Albans Shield, will be moved on March 24 to the Alban Arena during the construction work.

The Tourist Information Centre will be renamed the Visitors Information Centre to reflect the fact it serves everyone who comes to St Albans and not just tourists.

Cllr Beric Read, who is responsible for community engagement and localism at St Albans District Council, said: “The Town Hall has served as an outstanding location for the Tourist Information Centre for many years now.

“It is being put out of action for the next 18 months while it is redeveloped into what will be a magnificent new museum and gallery.

“There was no choice but to move the information centre while that happened.

“The Alban Arena, though, is another excellent location as it is one of the best known buildings in the city centre and easy to find.

“The renaming to Visitor Information Centre is to show that anybody can use this service, including residents.

“We are grateful to our partners 1Life, who manages the Alban Arena on our behalf, for assisting us with this move.”

The centre will be positioned in the large entrance lobby of the Alban Arena and will still be open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4.30pm.

The Town Hall is due to reopen as a museum and art gallery in the autumn of 2017.
