Students at St Albans High School for Girls were greeted by not one, but two identical headmistresses this week as part of British Science Week.

On Monday, March 14, Headmistress Jenny Brown announced that the theme for her assembly was science.

The talk would revolve around her life as an identical twin.

She said: “As an identical twin I was formed from one zygote, or egg, which split very early on in pregnancy and became two separate embryos, which have the same genetic pattern.”

She went on to discuss how interesting identical twins are to medical science and to psychologists, and then ran through a number of questions she is often asked about being a twin.

As the presentation drew to a close, Mrs Brown’s identical twin sister, Jane, also a headmistress but at Wimbledon High School, appeared at the back of the assembly hall.

Dressed identically, the twins proceeded to finish each other’s sentences before discussing other interesting facts about identical twins.

Sixth former Isabelle Blain said: “They left us with an interesting question – which one is the evil twin?”

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration, between March 11-20, of science, technology, engineering and maths with events and activities taking place across the UK.
