Family and friends of two young girls who died whilst volunteering in Africa are raising money for charities in both the UK and abroad.

Alice Barnett, 19, from St Albans, and Summer Robertson, 21, from Shrewsbury, died in 2014 after drowning in rip current as they waded in the Indian Ocean just four days before returning home.

The two girls had spent the previous 10 weeks volunteering in South Africa with Lattitude – the international youth development charity which provides volunteering opportunities overseas.

Now their family and friends are hoping to raise money for various charities in the UK and around the world by hosting the Beautiful Alice Festival 2016 – Charity Jam on June 4.

Alice’s mum Suzie Barnett, who lives in Canterbury, said: “Our loss is unbearable but we are trying to find the courage to keep going.

“We all feel so strong. We all want to make sure Alice is still a big part of our lives.

“One of the ways we are doing this is by raising money to support some of the projects that Alice felt so passionately about in her short but wonderful life.

“She was a fierce campaigner for human and animal rights and fought in justice wherever she found it.”

This is the second festival organised to help raise money for the various charities which Alice was a strong campaigner for.

Last year there was around 300 people who came to the festival but this year the family are hoping more than 1,000 will attend.

All profits will go to support charities that Alice believed both in the UK and abroad including the organisation in Cambodia, The Future of Khmer Children.

The last event raised enough money to provide funding for a whole new classroom, essential repairs and maintenance to existing buildings, supplies and a clean water well.

Mrs Barnett said: “We have had hugely generous offers of help and expert assistance pouring in, including a fabulous line-up.

“Artists and performers have offered their services for free and everyone on site will be making a donation to our charities.

“We are confident that our Beautiful Alice Festival will be an amazing day and will be the foundation for us to build on in the difficult years ahead.”

The music festival will run from 1pm to 1am on June 4. Tickets cost £20 and can be bought at www.beautifulalice.co.uk.
