Helping children navigate a route to career success is a crucial but tricky role for teachers.

In acknowledgement for their efforts at guiding students into the world of work, Sir John Lawes School has been presented with the Inspiring Hertfordshire 2016 Education in Employment Award.

The prize from the Chamber of Commerce recognises the efforts of the school to boost student career prospects by offering them opportunities to meet potential employers.

Initiatives includes the school’s annual careers day event which this March saw around 600 secondary school pupils from across Harpenden learn about job opportunities from over 65 companies and graduate employers.

The school in Manland Way has also launched an annual event to promote apprenticeships as a route into employment.

At their first ‘Higher Apprenticeship’ in March more than 90 parents and students got to find out about opportunities at some of the country’s largest employers including Barclays, John Lewis and KPMG.

Headteacher Claire Robins said: “Preparing our students for life after education is an important part of our provision and I am delighted that the hard work of our careers team has been recognised with this prestigious award.”
