Bricks to rebuild an historic wall are being specially made to preserve its original appearance.

The bricks will be used to restore the wall at a corner of St Peter’s Church in St Albans and the Age Concern office.

Work was due to start in the spring but is now scheduled to start this month. It will take up to eight to ten weeks depending on the weather.

St Albans District Cllr Brian Ellis said: “Rebuilding this wall and making it safe again is a complex project because of the historic importance of the site.

“St Peter’s Church dates back many centuries and is one of the City’s most notable landmarks.

“We want to preserve the look and character of the surrounding area and are using as much of the original materials as we can.

“Although it has caused a slight delay to the work we have even gone to the lengths of ordering specially made bricks to ensure the best possible results.”

The footpath beside the wall will be closed during the reconstruction and a temporary one marked out nearby.

The brick and flint wall was found to be in danger of collapsing last year and shored up with scaffolding. An investigation revealed it needed to be rebuilt.

A considerable amount of work had to be undertaken and permissions obtained to allow the council to take down and rebuild the wall.
