Former footballers played against celebrities and cricket professionals at a charity match in St Albans.

Hundreds of spectators enjoyed watching Willow XI v Lord’s Taverners XI on July 3 at Old Abanian’s sports ground.

Captained by former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper, Bob Wilson, Willow XI beat Lord’s Taverners XI, with a score of 175 to 173.

Mr Wilson, Willow co-founder said: “What a fantastic day. It’s always a pleasure working with Lord’s Taverners and it was great to be back in Hertfordshire at the impressive Old Albanian's ground.

“Thanks to the players on both teams and all the local volunteers who gave up their time to be here helping to raise funds for the charities.”

Other celebrities involved in the charity match were David Seaman, former Arsenal and England goalkeeper, his wife, Frankie, and her ice skating partner Matt Evers, Martin Chivers, former Tottenham player and Monty Panesar, English international cricketer.

TalkSPORT presenter Andy Jacobs and BBC weather forecaster John Hammond were also there, and former professional cricketers Sai Mahmood, Matthew Boyce, Min Patel and Neil Burns.

This was the third cricket match between the two charities. The first was won by Lord’s Taverners in 1999 and the second won by Willow in 2009.

At the end of the game there was an auction and raffle and money raised from the event was split between Willow and Lord’s Taverners charities.

Willow is a national charity that works with ill young adults to provide them with uplifting and unforgettable days.

Lord’s Taverners is a youth cricket and disability sports charity dedicated to giving disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance.
