More than 5,000 people turned out for the Harpenden Lions Highland Gathering.

Now in it's 21st year, thousands of visitors enjoyed Scottish dancing, piping competitions and a falconry display, on July 10.

Deputy mayor David Heritage opened the gathering at Rothamsted Park, that included performances from singer songwriter Emma McGrath and the Celtic rock band, Wight Hot Pipes.

There were also dance displays from Hiel’and Toe Club and Dance Studio.

And favourites like putting the stone and tossing of the caber also made a comeback.

The dog and duck displays were popular and thousands were entertained by the ferret races.

Children competed in several races and enjoyed go-karts, a climbing wall and fun fair rides.

And there were a number of stalls selling gifts, produce, food and drink and others raising awareness and money for charity.

Harpenden Lions president John Powell said: “It would not be possible for the event to be such a success without a huge amount of effort from all involved and we are very appreciative.

"It is an example of how so many voluntary organisations can come together to help each other: Round Table, Rotary, Soroptimists, other Lions Clubs, Scouts and Army and Air cadets, not just from Harpenden, but also from St Albans, Luton and further afield."

The event raised money for charities including the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Association (PSPA), Diabetes Advice and Support Hertfordshire (DASH) and Harpenden Lion’s own charities.
