Thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused in Harpenden when arsonists set bales of straw alight.

Police are appealing to members of the public for information and issuing safety advice after two incidents of arson at a farm in Common Lane, Harpenden.

They occurred at around 8.30pm on Sunday, July 31, and between 12.30pm and 1.20pm on Sunday, July 7.

PC Jane Flemons is investigating and said: “The farm has been targeted by youths who have been climbing over the straw and disturbing cattle, including calves.

"This has escalated to the two fires being started which has cost the farmer significantly.

“I would appeal to anyone who knows who may be responsible for these incidents to please contact me with information.

“I would also ask parents to speak with their children not only about the dangers of starting fires but about being on a farm and near livestock. Anyone found to have been involved in any offences could also end up with a criminal record.”

Anyone who has any information which could assist the investigation is asked to contact the Herts Police non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference number F2/16/1310.
