A family are hoping for donations to secure a future for a baby girl with a terminally ill father.

David Landau, 30, originally from Harpenden, was given just 18 months to live this year after his health rapidly deteriorated.

With no life insurance and his wife taking on the role of full-time carer, Mr Landau’s sister, Susan Stokes, 32, set up a Just Giving account to ensure that their 1-year-old daughter has financial support.

Ms Stokes, said: “When David did work, he was self-employed. If you stop working, that’s it. Lucy has her family around her, and we would never see her go without.

“But to take the pressure off Nicole, it would be nice to know that something is there.”

As well as raising money for Lucy’s future, funds raised through the Just Giving page will also go to Macmillan Cancer Trust.

Ms Stokes said: “Macmillan gave my brother and his family their first holiday away to Centre Parcs. They had such a lovely time and made very special memories.”

In 2014 the family’s life was turned upside down when Mr Landau was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. The news came as his wife, Nicole, 26, discovered she was pregnant.

Lucy was born in 2015, as Mr Landau was going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The family were given a boost in 2016 as Mr Landau was given the all clear, which the couple celebrated by planning their wedding. But just weeks after the family were given another knock as Mr Landau was taken ill and doctors gave him 18 months to live.

The couple had to come to terms with the fact that Mr Landau may be too ill to get married in 2018, Mrs Landau’s sister-in-law got in touch with a UK charity, Gift of a Wedding, who bought the date forward to August this year and paid for the whole event.

Ms Stokes said: “We have been truly touched by the kind donations and messages of love and support from everyone out there. I am utterly grateful at the amount of generosity out there.”
