A charity organisation has donated nearly £2,000 to a school in Africa.

The Harpenden Lions Club raised £1,770 from their Charity Golf Day which will be donated to Spotlight on Africa to help fund the development training of two teachers Grace Adengo and Molly Wananda.

Both teachers work at a primary school called Musoto Christian School (MCS) near the town of Mbale in Eastern Uganda.

Grace said: "I am so happy to be at this school because I can continue my teaching studies.

"This is the greatest gift from MCS to me. I am so proud to teach in the only primary school in the area with electricity and I can teach the children when it is dark outside."

Spotlight has been supporting MCS since it started in 2005 with around 30 students. This year, there are 1,000 students enrolled and the teachers have more than 100 in each of their classes.

Molly said “I like teaching at MCS because the staff and administration team are good to work with. It is conducive for teaching and has safe water at the school.

"I am motivated by the training I receive and I know that I can support my family because my salary is always paid in full."

The President of the Harpenden Lions Club, John Powell, together with Vice President Mohan Cashyap, presented the cheque.

Mr Cashyap said he is delighted their donation will be put towards helping Spotlight on Africa secure a promising future for so many young children.

Andrew Mayo, chairman of Spotlight on Africa - who received the cheque together with fundraiser Rory Scales - said: “We are thrilled by the donation from Lions. As we are all volunteers, more than 95p in the pound goes to our projects in Uganda.

"Our school enrolment of 1,000 this year has increased by some 50 per cent from last year.

"This has put a strain on the finances of the school, and the contribution from Lions is a sizeable contribution for us."

Spotlight is lifting their fundraising activity to new heights with an abseiling event on October 1, 2016.
