Councillors are asking an airport for answers after residents’ voice concern over aeroplane noise.

St Albans District Council head of planning, councillor Tracy Harvey, has written to London Luton Airport asking how they plan to address residents’ issues.

A number of complaints have been made to the council from people living in Marshalwick, Batchwood and Sandridge.

People have suggested that noise problems intensified after the introduction of a new satellite navigation system called RNAV and now the airport is apparently introducing a new system known as RNP.

Councillor Harvey has asked the airport when there will be a review of RNAV and whether RNP will reduce the number of flights over residential areas. She also asked the airport to hold community consultations informing residents of new developments.

Cllr Bert Pawle, who represents the council on the airport’s consultative committee, said: “A considerable number of residents to the north of St Albans do feel there has been an increase in noise disturbance due to the change in Luton Airport flight paths.

“This letter is intended to ensure the airport is aware of those concerns and that they are taken into account when reviewing the new navigation system.

“The letter calls on the airport to make a major effort to engage with residents in areas affected by noise.

“In particular, it is suggested that they hold a meeting aimed at residents in north St Albans where there is concern about aircraft noise.”
