Children watched in awe as a cardboard replica of London went up in flames.

To mark the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London, Wheatfields Infants and Nursery School recreated the fire on their playground.

Firefighters from St Albans Fire Station’s Red Watch were on hand to oversee the proceedings and put the controlled fire out.

Clare Cockburn, acting head teacher, said: “All of the children were totally engaged in the learning and were excited to see their own ’predictions’ about the Fire of London come true. A huge thank you to our local firefighters for making the event so memorable. ”

Year 1 and 2 had visited the ‘Great Fire of London Exhibition’ at the museum of London. When the children returned to the school they created models of 17th London part of their Design and Technology lessons.

After the display, firefighters spoke to the children and explained why the Great Fire of London has caused so much destruction and been so difficult to extinguish. After the excitement, the children had the chance to look at the crew’s fire engine and learn about fire safety.
