The sweet smell of flowers drifted through the pews of one of St Albans most historic churches.

St Leonard’s Church, in Sandridge, celebrated its 40th anniversary of its annual free flower festival on the weekend of October 30.

More than 40 floral creations designed by children, groups and members of the community were on display. The Mayor of St Albans, Councillor Frances Leonard made her own arrangement to celebrate her Mayoral year.

Rev Peter Crumpler, Curate at St Leonard’s, said: “The flower festival is always a major event in the church calendar. It draws many hundreds of people to the church throughout the three days, and it's a very special occasion that brings the whole community together.”

Other arrangements celebrated the 80th anniversary of the death of St Albans golfer and businessman Sam Ryder - on the weekend that the Ryder Cup was being contested.

Jersey Farm's Woodland Park had an arrangement to celebrate winning community green space award for the fifth year.

Children from Sandridge School sang on Friday, the day that the flower festival opened and the Sandridge knitted village was a popular feature.
