SIR Vince Cable urged voters to unite against Brexit during a public meeting held in St Albans.

The former business secretary joined Daisy Cooper, the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for St Albans, at the event at St Peter’s Church.

Sir Vince campaigned for the United Kingdom to stay in the European Union and told those at the meeting despite the result, they should not lie down and accept this.

“Brexit means Brexit is an empty phrase,” he said.

“The truth is that the government has absolutely no plan and with a divided Labour party, there’s no effective opposition either.

“Meanwhile, there is an urgent need to reach out to those who feel politics has failed them.”

Around 60 people attended the Stronger Together meeting and were able to have a Q and A session with Ms Cooper and Sir Vince.

Residents told the St Albans Lib Dem group that they would never again vote Conservative after Anne Main and the Tories failed to support their demands to stay in the EU, protect the green belt and improve rail service for commuters.

The organisations hope to set up similar events over the next few months, inviting politicians from other parties known to support or be sympathetic of Remain voters and their hopes to build progressive alliances.

Sandy Walkington, former Liberal Democrat candidate for St Albans, said: “I know that Daisy will be an excellent champion for St Albans in Parliament.

“Only Daisy and the Liberal Democrats offer a progressive alternative to Anne Main and the Tories.”
