A marketing stunt backfired when suspicious residents called police after finding free toilet rolls outside their homes.

Police initially advised callers not to use packets of Velvet Comfort that began appearing on doorsteps in Harpenden several weeks ago.

But concern turned to amusement when it emerged the unsolicited deliveries were not the work of pranksters or criminals but a promotion.

John Allen, of Colney Heath, was unsure what to make of the gesture.

He said: : “I am a bit concerned as I do not know why or who left it.

“Is it safe to use? Or is it a terrorist plot to infect us?

“My neighbours have not had them but have been told they are popping up in New Greens, St Albans.”

Others saw the funny side.

Leah Duffy wrote on a Facebook post in Harpenden Parents Network: “Has he been to Southdown yet? I can’t wait for the luxury toilet paper.

“It is like waiting for Christmas.”

Jeanette Lendon said if anyone else saw the man distributing the paper to send him to Redbourn as they were just about to run out.

Speaking on behalf of Hertfordshire Constabulary Becca Choules said: “Following enquires from officers, it has been established that this is the results of a legitimate promotion.”

Velvet has been approached for a comment.
