A ukulele-strumming community group raised a “wonderful total” for the “essential" work of a hospice.

The 70-strong Ver Players held the concert at St Albans’ Jubilee Hall on October 1, and donated a cheque worth £2,500 to Rennie Grove Hospice Care at a practice session on Sunday.

Stephen Wragg, a member of the players, said: “We are very pleased to have raised this wonderful total for them, especially as they rely so much on local support to fund their work.”

He added: “Rennie Grove Hospice Care do wonderful work locally, supporting people to die in their home, which would usually be their choice, by providing nursing care and support for their families.”

Gemma Bateman, Senior Community Fundraiser at Rennie Grove, pointed out 84 per cent of their funding is raised locally, and thanked the players for the “great sum of money” they donated.
