The top ten worst residential areas for crime in St Albans have been revealed thanks to the latest figures released by Hertfordshire Constabulary.

The data shows the worst areas for crime in the city from September 2015 until August 2016.

It is important to stress that, due to the nature of the logging system, incidents are ascribed to “snap points” so that the victims cannot be easily identified. This means all the crimes listed happened “on or near” the road mentioned.

Are there any surprises on this list?

10. Lavender Crescent

In tenth place is Lavender Crescent, which creeps into the top ten with 42 incidents reported on this road since September 2015.

In the last year, there were 36 crimes reported at this location, with 14 instances of violent or sexual offences, ten reports of criminal damage or arson, and seven public order offences.

There were also 11 instances of anti-social behaviour, but these are not considered crimes by police.

9. Batchwood Drive

Batchwood Drive was ninth in the list with 52 criminal incidents. Included in these 52 cases were 28 violent or sexual offences, five public order offences, and four cases of criminal damage or arson.

8. High Street

Police were called to High Street 59 times in the last year, with 26 of those for anti-social behaviour. Of the crimes reported, violent or sexual assaults made up 11 of those incidents, shoplifting seven, and criminal damage or arson a further three.

7. Griffiths Way

Anti-social behaviour made up nearly half of all incidents in Griffiths Way, with 24 of the 61 reports being of this nature.

In terms of actual crime, other theft was recorded an astonishing 33 times, shoplifting twice, and vehicle crime, violent or sexual assaults, and public order offences registering just one incident each.

6. Sutton Road

Of Sutton Road’s 67 incidents, six were attributed to anti-social behaviour. The lion’s share of the remainder related to theft in some form, with 26 “other thefts”, 13 instances of shoplifting, and ten thefts from a person.

5. Holywell Hill

Holywell Hill finished fifth with 71 incidents. Anti-social behaviour formed the lion’s share of offences in the area, with 39 cases recorded.

Violent or sexual offences accounted for 12 criminal instances, while public order offences were recorded five times, and public order and criminal damage offences registered four cases each.

4. New Kent Road

Of the 73 reports to police on or near New Kent Road over the last year, ten were of an anti-social behaviour nature.

Actual crimes were made up of violent or sexual offences (14), drug offences (nine), and public order offences (eight).

3. Chequer Street

Chequer Street was the third worst area for crime in St Albans in the last 12 months, with 74 incidents reported to police.

Shoplifting dominated here, with 16 incidents. Other theft featured 12 times, while violent or sexual offences came up a further eight times.

2. St Peter’s Street

We hit a sharp increase in the number of criminal reports as we go to the second worst street for crime in St Albans; St Peter’s Street.

In the last year alone, 109 criminal reports were recorded on or near St Peter’s Street, 35 of them for shoplifting, and ten for each in the “other theft” and public order categories.

1. Waddington Road

By far the worst residential area for crime over the last 12 months is Waddington Road, with 320 reports of criminal incidents – nearly treble that of second place St Peter’s Street.

Violent or sexual assaults were recorded 99 times, shoplifting 74 times, and theft from a person a further 31 times.

Only four instances of anti-social behaviour were recorded in this area in the 12 month period.

These figures only take into account residential areas. Crimes recorded as taking place at supermarkets, petrol stations and nightclubs are not included in the list.
