Amateur dramatic society the Radlett Players will be presenting a play by Simon Williams, well known for his role as James Bellamy in the period drama Upstairs, Downstairs.

Laying the Ghost is a fast moving and witty play is set in Yew Tree House, a retirement home for a group of eccentric, charming and 'growing old outrageously' theatricals.

The plot revolves around an ex-actress, Margot Buchanan, who does not want to be reminded that it is her birthday but, to her great displeasure, receives three birthday visitors: her ex-husband Sir Leo Buchanan, a well-known actor and philanderer, his second wife and his current mistress.

If that isn’t enough to ruin Margot’s birthday, an unexpected death certainly will.

This production for The Radlett Centre is being directed by Marek Wedler whose am-dram journey began in musical theatre in 1996 with Hello Dolly for Harrow Operatic.

Most recently Marek entered the world of film production and is currently in mid-shooting schedule for Whisperwood, a Napoleonic ghost story filmed in spectacular locations in Hertfordshire and Devon.

Speaking of this production Laying the Ghost, Marek Wedler says: “I could not have asked for a better cast. They bring Simon Williams' charming play to life with humour and occasionally, wonderful pathos. Working with everybody at Radlett, from the production crew right up to the chairperson, is a joy.”

First formed in 1959 the Radlett Players put on two plays a year in spring and the autumn in the Radlett Area. They complete a number of other in-house productions such as sketch evenings and one-act plays.

The Players also meet monthly for play reading evenings and hold regular social events throughout the year.
