The makes and models of Hertfordshire Constabulary’s unmarked police cars have been revealed, and there are a few surprises on the list, including some that can really burn rubber.

There are 14 different makes that form the constabulary’s 266-strong unmarked fleet.

At the high spec end – fast cars especially chosen because of their usefulness in high-speed pursuits – there are eight BMWs of various models, including two 320s, one 330, and one X3 – a 4x4 “sports activity vehicle”. There is also a single Audi A6 in the fleet.

As well as these top-end models, there are also some less spritely inclusions, such as vans perfectly suited for undercover operations and surveillance.

These include three Ford Transits, two Mercedes Sprinters and two VW Caddys.

Unusually, the force also owns a single Citroen Picasso people carrier, more commonly used by mums and dads to ferry children about.

The most common type of unmarked car currently used by the force is the Vauxhall Corsa (119), followed by the Vauxhall Astra (47).

But the constabulary does not limit itself to just four-wheeled vehicles. There are also several unmarked motorbikes in the fleet, including a BMW K – a bike capable of white-knuckle acceleration and impressive speed – a Honda VFR, and three Suzuki DRs.
