The most popular baby names in 2016 have been revealed - and comic books and sci-fi films seem to be providing inspiration.

There has been a rise in the use of Kara, Harley and Quinn, research has revealed, as well as Nova, Orion and Luna.

Elsewhere in the rankings, which were compiled by parenting site BabyCentre, Felicity and Thea have enjoyed a surge in popularity.

Star Wars-themed names like Kylo, Leia and Finn have also been boosted by The Force Awakens film, statistics show.

Olivia and Oliver are once again the most popular names for baby girls and boys in 2016.

Lily and Sophie are second and third in the girl’s list, with Muhammed the second most popular boy’s name and Noah the third.

Celebrities continue to provide a source of inspiration for mums and dads, figures show.

Victoria Beckham’s daughter Harper has apparently become a young trend-setter - her name has jumped 31 places to 56 in the girl’s list.

And there was a late surge in parents choosing the name River, after Jamie Oliver chose the name for his new son.

There are twice as many babies called Kit and Klay, the names given by Colleen and Wayne Rooney, compared to last year, with Kai another new entry to the top 100 in 2016.
