St Albans city has been named as one of the best places to live in the entire country.

The city’s colourful history has been praised by both the Daily Mail and the Telegraph in their lists of the best places to live in the UK.

Known as Verulamium to the Romans St Albans seems to have it all. From lush green parks and countryside to a metropolis with attractions plus an ancient history dating back as far as the Romans.

St Albans District Councillor Beric Read said: “This is another ringing endorsement of the St Albans District. It is indeed a fabulous place to live.

“It is a shame we are not in the number one spot. Perhaps next year, we will be.

“This area has so much to offer already, but soon there will be even more. The City Centre will transformed over the coming year by the creation of a new museum and art gallery at the Town Hall and the Cathedral is to have a new welcome centre for visitors.

“There are also long-term plans to make improvements to Harpenden with a new leisure centre as well as an arts and cultural hub.”

The St Albans Cathedral was built in the 16th century and became a cathedral in 1877. The city used to be the second city in Britain after London.

Being just 20 minutes from London St Pancras it is no surprise the city has been ranked in these lists.

With the third highest earnings in the country, at £1,018 per week, which is far higher than the average of £646, the house prices are also very high representing 10.8 times income.

Jake Woolmer, of the sales team at Frost’s Estate Agency, said: “We get a lot of people coming into our office asking to hear about St Albans.

“I love St Albans and live in the local area. Where else would you want to go? The transport into central London is good and they will only get better, we have great schools and the area is very picturesque.”

Those who live in St Albans are not only proud of their city but a large proportion of adults have the highest levels of qualifications across the whole country.

Not only is the city one of the best places to live in the UK it is also number one on the list of best places to visit in Hertfordshire.
