A woman is angry after a storage company got rid of her lifelong belongings because of a ‘clerical error’.

Adrienne Posner, 69, lived near Napsbury Park, in St Albans, but decided to move to America to be with her son.

Mrs Posner placed all of her belongings in the hands of the storage company Eagle Relocations, based in Ascot Road, Watford.

However, the company, which said her belongings would be delivered in mid-December, has now said her items have been removed from their storage due to a clerical error.

Mrs Posner said: “There were memories in my belongings that I will never get back now. I cannot even begin to explain what this has done to me.

“I had to keep my belongings in storage for a year and a half while I got my US visa. I only came to America with one bag which is what you are allowed to do.

“Now the company is saying all my belongings have been removed from their storage because of a clerical error. They are offering me £3,500 compensation but £2,000 is my deposit, so really they are offering to pay me £1,500 for all my lifelong belongings.”

According to Mrs Posner, the company is saying she should have taken insurance on her belongings but she said there was no mention of insurance except for the actual overseas move.

She added: “I lost my husband a few years ago and there were items in there from him but now they have all gone. All our life was in those boxes, we met when we were sixteen. There were years and years of photos in those boxes.

“It’s called memories that was all I had. They have destroyed that. Without any reason they were paid up to date. How can anyone trust them?”

A few months before she moved to America, her son also moved and used the same company to store his belongings.

However, because of financial reasons he was unable to keep up the monthly payments and his belongings were also removed.

However Mrs Posner said she paid her monthly amount without any problem and cannot understand why her items were removed.

She said: “It may have been an honest mistake while they were destroying my son’s belongings they thought my stuff was also his.

“What would they do if they had a Smith or Jones, just throw everyone’s stuff out. Have they no organisation? People entrust them with their goods unfortunately they cannot be trusted.

“My son is a lot younger than me and he can get back some of his memories but mine are all gone.

“For me there is nothing to restore, all my family’s stuff was left to me as I am the last one left.

“I now have no photos of my parents or grandparents, and my brother who I lost quite young.

"All gone like their lives were worthless. Actually they were all wonderful people sorely missed I did have my parents on video all gone.

"My wedding album, which was 50 years old, can never ever be replaced, neither can my son’s bar mitzvah album or video.”

Mrs Posner said the company cannot destroy anyone’s items but instead sells people’s belongings but she does not know how much money the company made has got from her belongings.

Onkar Sharma, of Eagle Relocations, said: “We move more than 23,000 people a year and never had a complaint. This was an error.

"When we were getting rid of her son’s belongings after he did not pay for the storage for more than a year we also removed her items.

“We are very sorry about this. We have offered Mrs Posner some compensation and we do hope to come to an amicable solution.

"Whether your items are in storage or travelling, you should always get insurance on them in case something happens. We offered this to Mrs Posner but she said no.”

Eagle Relocations is a family run business that has been operating for more than 50 years.
