A number of people over the weekend enjoyed the crisp, winter weather by ice skating on frozen lakes – however this has caused concern after some have fallen in.
The winter weather froze over Verulamium Lake, in St Albans, and many people thought it was a good idea to skate across the ice.
However, warnings have been raised after a number of people fell into the water as the ice was just not thick enough.
Debbi White, head of community services at St Albans City and District Council, said: “Walking and playing on frozen lakes and waterways can be extremely dangerous.
“Even if the ice feels hard at the edge of the lake, further out it will be weaker and could break under your weight.
“In the past, there have been instances around the country of people drowning after trying to walk on frozen water. Please stay safe by staying off the ice.”
Despite these warnings others believe skating on the ice was enjoyable and no harm could be happen due to the depth of the water.
David Wachs, 54, from Kings Langley, who visited Verulamium Lakes, in St Albans, said: “Some people did fall into the water. I did not see it myself though.
“It is quite dangerous. But I think you should live life close to nature.”
Although some people have fallen into the water, the East of England Ambulance service was not called to the lakes for an emergency.
However the ambulance service has issued warnings about the dangers of skating on thin ice.
The East of England Ambulance service has been approached for a comment.
