The writer, photographer and, most famously, explorer Levison Wood will be sharing his adventures and exploits in his new one man show.

The Channel 4 presenter’s decade of work has taken him around the world leading expeditions on five continents and he is an elected Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club.

In An Evening with Levison Wood at the Alban Arena on Thursday he will recount his life story, from starting out at as an officer in the British Parachute Regiment, where he served in Afghanistan fighting against Taliban insurgents in Helmand, Kandahar and Zabul in 2008, to his subsequent transition into international explorer.

The evening will include further tales and behind the scenes moments from his journeys. In 2013, he spent nine months to walk the entire length of the river Nile, starting in Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda - the first expedition of its kind to be recorded.

In 2015, he walked the length of the Himalayas, starting in Afghanistan until he reach Bhutan.

In his most recent travels he walked 1,800 miles along the length of Central America, taking in eight countries from Mexico to Colombia in a bid to cross the treacherous Darien Gap - a large area of undeveloped swampland and forest between Panama and Colombia.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

While Levison won’t be walking from venue to venue across the UK, he says: “I’ll talk about the challenges and pitfalls; the dangers and the rewards of a career as a professional traveller. I’ll also share some stories from ‘behind the scenes’ that don’t make it into the TV series.

“I hope I’ll inspire people to go on their own adventures and make people laugh and challenge their perceptions of places. I’m very fortunate to be able to do this for a living and I love the challenge of speaking in front of hundreds of people and trying to keep them entertained. It’s great to be able to share my experiences.”

During the evening you will be able to ask questions. I wondered what the most unusual question is that he’s ever been asked, unfortunately he didn’t have anything crazy to offer.

“I can’t recall anything particularly strange, but people should feel free to ask away. I usually get a lot of practical questions. What’s the worst food you’ve eaten (bush rat), what make of boots do you wear (Altberg), how many changes of clothes do you get through (not many - two or three max). That kind of thing. Kids ask some really good questions, as they don’t self-censor.”

In previous shows Levison has told tales from trips in which he has immersed himself in unknown cultures and customs around the world, with adventures ranging from being chased by crocodiles and hippos in Africa, shot at by gunmen, falling off a mountain, being arrested more times than he can remember and meeting such illustrious characters as the Dalai Lama and George Clooney in the course of his travels.

His latest documentary series from which much of the evening was inspired, Walking The Americas, aired on Channel 4 throughout January this year; whilst his book of the same name is being published by Hodder & Stoughton this month.
