Four St Albans community projects are to receive funds from property developers.

Among projects receiving grants are the Colney Heath section of the Albans Way cycling and walking trail, who receive £35,000 towards improvements such as the restoration of the Smallford rail station ticket office.

St Albans City and District Council’s cabinet announced the contributions in a meeting on Thursday, 16 March, which come from Section 106 of planning obligations.

“We are intent on making the best possible use of this money by working with the local councillors who know their areas,” said Portfolio holder for the Environment Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles.

“S106 money is making a substantial different to communities throughout the district.”

Funds from Section 106 planning obligations are payments made by developers in recognition that a rise in population caused by new homes leads to more demand for community infrastructure.

Almost £230,000 has been allocated to St Peters, London Colney and Wheathampstead wards, with decisions yet to be made about its distribution.

Other projects receiving funding include £1,000 for leaflet holders at Jersey Farm Woodland Park in Marshalswick North, £29,000 to revamp two play areas in Marquis Lane, Harpenden East, and £2,500 to Camp in Cunningham, St Albans.
