A roofer saved his boss by giving him one of his kidneys.

David Flecknell, 34, has worked with Gary Smith, 58, at G J Smith Roofing in St Albans for more than 15 years.

When Mr Smith was diagnosed with kidney failure in December 2015 and had only 8 percent kidney function, Mr Flecknell decided he would go under the knife to save his boss.

Mr Smith's daughter Kerry Majchrowski said: "Being Gary's daughter I offered him a kidney as did my my sister Natalie, but he felt he couldn't take our kidney and declined the offers.

"But David insisted on donating his kidney and would not take no for an answer."

Mr Smith and Mr Flecknell had the transplant surgery in December 2016 and both are back at work, with Mr Smith's doctor saying his was one of the fastest recoveries he has seen.

The roofers, along with 11 others in the firm, will be running a 5km fun run for Kids in Action in July to commemorate their recoveries and raise money for charity.
