Neighbours have launched a petition to save trees which may be felled as part of a management plan.

The Save the Wick petition, launched on change.org by Wendy Brook, is aiming to gain 1,000 signatures to put to the St Albans City and District Council.

The Wick Greenspace Action Plan, which proposes new measures to maintain the area until 2022, says that “small groups” of mature sycamore teams have already been felled to provide light where new trees can grow.

Debbi White, Head of Community Services for St Albans City and District Council, said: “The Wick Management plan public consultation is scheduled to be open for another two weeks.

“In this time we welcome all comments and take on board all feedback we get from the public and once the consultation period comes to an end on Sunday 14th May, the Council will discuss all responses with the Friends of the Wick and Ward Councillors and the Countryside Management Service.

“The Management plan will then be updated where applicable.”

The petition has already received 678 signatures, with some people writing comments of support and their reasons for signing on the website.

Andrew Taylor wrote: “I grew up playing at The Wick and we still visit with my children who love exploring this natural woodland.

Leave the Wick alone and stop making change for change's sake.”

The consultation details are available on the council’s website.
