St Albans Conservative candidate believes it is “enormously important to look at the big picture for St Albans”.

Anne Main, who took the seat from Labour’s Kerry Pollard in 2005, says she has “been involved in every important local issue” including her fight against a rail freight depot in favour of better development on the “blighted” Park Street site.

But key to this, she believes, is getting in place an updated district plan to avoid planning applications going through on appeal and offices being “hollowed out” for residential premises.

She said: “It all keeps coming back to having this vision for St Albans and we need to have it.

“We have got to make sure we get the balance right with developments and the job of an MP is to make sure you know your area inside and out.”

Ms Main is concerned Network Rail is “very rarely accountable” for the issues commuters face, with this being more important than the franchising of First Capital Connect by Govia.

She added: “People need to know if they want to buy homes in St Albans that they can get to work on time.”

With regards Brexit, Ms Main is concerned never-ending referendums will weaken the UK’s position in negotiations, with both sides making clear before the referendum that there would be “no second bite of the cherry.”

She said: “If we’re going to have a deal what incentive is there for the EU to give us a good deal if they think we might go back?”

She added: “We won’t get the best deal through a weak and dithering coalition, we won’t get it through protest parties, or through a divided Labour Party. We’ll get it through a strong government led by Theresa May.”

Ms Main asks voters to “judge me by what I do” compared to politicians offering “sweeties” to the electorate which they cannot follow through, and will defy the whip if needed to be “their voice in Westminster”.
