The famed Asian lantern festival is coming to Potters Bar for the first time this September.

“Shine Up” on September 30 will see people coming together to release hundreds of bio-degradable lanterns into the night’s sky over Colesdale Farm, Northaw Road West.

Lanterns releases such as this date back to the Western Han Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago, where lanterns were released at the climax of Chinese New Year.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

Festival organiser Jamie Connolly said: “Some people may come to celebrate the life of a loved one, turn over a new leaf, find strength in a difficult time, remember hopes and dreams or to let go of regrets. It will be unique to everyone.

“The beauty of this is people will be able to make it completely personal to themselves. They will be able to write their message on their lantern and release it into the night.

“The sight of so many lanterns all being set free at once should make for spectacular viewing. We can’t wait to watch them light up the Herts sky.”

The first of its kind in the UK, the festival has given people across Asia the opportunity to express themselves in a variety of ways in unity with their neighbours.

The event will also have live DJ sets, live music and family-friendly activities as well as giving festival-goers to choose their spot.

Tickets and more information are available on the Shine Up website.
