A church and community centre has got the go ahead for an extension to their buildings, but are looking for support from businesses to help the plans go ahead.
Harpenden Salvation Army in Leyton Green are building a new worship hall, counselling room, kitchen and two multi-purpose community halls to their community centre, as well as improving access, toilets and offices for visitors.
The building project, given the green light by St Albans City and District Council after a public consultation, will cost around £250,000 and the church is looking for businesses and sponsors to get involved.
HSA corps officer, or church minister Captain Kenneth Guest said with new housing developments coming to the town, a "safe place" for older people to meet and socialise is of growing importance.
He said: “Our growing community programme and worshipping congregation have been in need of more space and a building that is fit for purpose and accessible to all for some time now - so we are so excited to be able to announce that we have been given planning permission.
“The Salvation Army has been at the heart of Harpenden for more than 130 years and our plans reflect our continued commitment to this town and our desire to be a compassionate and reliable support."
