A feud between an entertainer and carnival organisers has emerged after Harpenden Carnival on Saturday.

David Alexander, a children’s entertainer who performs under the name Mr Alexander, said he was “kicked out” by festival organisers who forced him to leave straight after his show.

But organisers at Harpenden Town Council say Mr Alexander was “rude and aggressive” towards the events team after being told he could not camp overnight.

Mr Alexander said he had not been informed he would have to leave that night and requested to stay, which was refused.

Carl Cheevers, at Harpenden Town Council, said: “Unfortunately Mr Alexander did not take this refusal very well and seemed to think that if he ignored it we would eventually allow him to camp overnight.

“My team quite rightly continued to request that he packed up his vehicle in order to vacate the site in line with all other performers.”

At 10pm, Mr Alexander told the team he would shortly be leaving but wanted to eat before leaving, when the events team threatened to call the police.

He said: “I returned from buying fish and chips and was half way through my meal when there was a knock on my door.

I was presented with three committee members who insisted that I should leave immediately and the police would be called if I was not gone in five minutes. “It felt like being kicked out of your town.”

Mr Cheevers, however, said this was due to the aggression they experienced from Mr Alexander, whose behaviour he called “unacceptable”.

Both parties have said they will not collaborate again for the carnival.
