Housing associations are carrying out safety checks at high-rise flats in Watford after the horrific blaze at Grenfell Tower in west London.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has been giving ‘reassurance and advice’ to residents living in all high-rise accommodation.

Six people are confirmed to have been killed and more than 70 are injured, including 20 who are in a critical condition, after flames tore up the 24-storey residential tower block in north Kensington during the early hours of this morning.

Watford Observer:

The horrific blaze left people trapped on upper floors and police said the death toll was expected to rise.

The tower had been recently been refurbished in a £8.6 million project which saw new cladding and windows installed.

The construction firm involved said the modernisation work ‘met all required building control, fire regulation, and health and safety standards'.

Watford Community Housing Trust said they have taken all "conceivable measures" to prevent the spread of fire in their high rise faults in the Meriden estate (below) - where champion boxer Anthony Joshua grew up.

Watford Observer:

They said: "Every year we undertake a Fire Risk Assessment of the building, and any risks that are identified are resolved.
