The St Albans MP has called on the government to assure council property residents of their safety following the fire at Grenfell Tower.

Anne Main MP wrote to Communities Secretary Sajid Javid and St Albans City and District Council to call on reviewing health and safety in council tenanted properties to make sure they are "properly maintained and meet the necessary criteria."

Mrs Main also asked Mr Javid to clarify policies around these standards and how they should be met.

She said: "The fire at Grenfell Tower is one of unimaginable horror, and my deepest condolences are with the victims and their families."

Mrs Main added that there are questions about the safety of fitting new structures to buildings, but she said we must wait until the public inquiry to know more.

She said: "The public inquiry is the right thing to do.

"The complexity and seriousness of last week’s fire has to be properly understood so it can be properly addressed in the future."

The council has said that the only building of six storeys or more in the district, Telford Court, has a non-flammable cladding around it and has had full safety checks.

The council will issue a further statement in due course.
