An MP has spoke out over "fuel poverty" rates in St Albans.
St Albans MP Anne Main told Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Greg Clark, that 6.6% of households in the constituency are in "fuel poverty", and that more must be done to advise people about switching energy tariffs.
Mrs Main said people being left to search online is "not the way forward" and more should be done to create a better dialogue between consumers and energy companies.
Mr Clark spoke out in agreement with the MP, saying "vulnerable consumers should not be required go on the internet every few months to check that their tariff has not defaulted to a much higher one."
The cabinet minister also said he has written to the energy regulator, Ofgem, to impose a price cap to ensure those on standard variable tariffs are not over-paying, after statistics showed customers were paying, on average, £1.4 billion more than would be the case in a competitive market.
