A fancy dress fundraiser to revitalise one of St Alban's parks will kick off on Saturday with a magical theme.

The Verulamium at Play group are holding a family fun day on July 15 to raise funds towards their £250,000 target to revamp the play area in Verulamium Park.

The "Wish Upon a Playground" fun day is aimed at pre-school and primary school children and will be calling on youngsters to come in fancy dress as fairies and wizards to fill the sky with bubbles and wish for the new playground.

Fun day organiser Kate Swindells said: "At the Wish Upon a Playground event, we are hoping to have fun whilst raising funds, and very much raising awareness of our project amongst families with young children (of which there are many in St Albans!).

"With the event taking place very close to the actual playground itself, we are hoping to capture the hearts and coins of many regulars.

"The event will end with a magical "wish" with all the children and our magical fairies that we will have in attendance."

The playground has not been reworked for more than 30 years and the event will hope to kick off two years of fundraising.

There will also be a raffle to raise funds as well as cake sales, a photobooth and face painting, with the event kicking off at 2pm.
