A running club has gone the distance and celebrated a decade of clocking up the miles.

The Harpenden Arrows celebrated their 10th anniversary with a barbeque at Bistro Gautier in Station Road on Sunday afternoon.

The club has welcomed 484 runners of mixed ability between 20 and 70 since it was started in 2007, with all current members aged 70 or over still competing in marathons.

The club has aimed to give seasoned runners a place to practice as well as encouraging beginners to take their first steps for charity runs.

Inaugural club chairman Colin Wareham was among the founders of the club who wanted to create a running community closer to home.

He said: “There were enthusiastic runners, but the nearest clubs were at St Albans, Luton, Hemel and Welwyn Garden City.

“From a standing start and no experience in running or setting up a club, I am thrilled that it has grown to where we are today and delighted with all the achievements the members have accomplished.

"We like to support local initiatives where possible, such as helping with the Herts 10k for the Rennie Grove Hospice Care, arranging the one and five-mile running events for the YWAM Harpenden summer fare, and our own 5k invitational event for local running clubs."

Members now include winners of the Run Herts Division 3 Midweek Road Race League for 2017, 25 participants of the London Marathon and Andy Jordan, who won the Crawley 24-hour ultra-marathon.

The club challenges runners to train in different ways, by including hill, speed or CPR training, a winter cross-country league, summer mid-week road race, a monthly 5k handicap and an annual overseas marathon.

Mr Wareham stepped down as chairman of the club and Graham Harper was elected to the post at the AGM in February.

The club meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays weekly at 7.30pm in the sports hall at St George's School, Sun Lane, Harpenden.
