Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a Gaelic football “player, teammate and friend” from St Albans who tragically died following a suspected assault in the Republic of Ireland.

Joseph Deacy, 21, was found with head injuries outside a house in Swinford, County Mayo, at around 6am on Saturday, August 12.

He was taken to hospital in Mayo before being transferred to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, where he died the next day.

Garda – the Republic of Ireland’s police force – said the death was being treated as murder and last week carried out a forensic examination of the scene.

Back in his Hertfordshire hometown, Mr Deacy was heavily involved in Gaelic football, playing for local side St Colmcilles.

The club paid tribute to the talented rising star, saying: “At 21 years of age, Joe had a bright future ahead of him. He had an amazing energy and a real lust for life.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

“He was a great friend and people were drawn to his character, his humour and outlook on life.

“It is difficult to say goodbye to anyone at any age but when it happens to someone so young it is especially difficult. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe's family and friends at this time. You will always be remembered by all of us here at the club, your friends and teammates.”
