More than 2,500 people in St Albans are missing out on the chance to vote in elections.

St Albans District Council is urging people to check their names are on the electoral register.

Most of the people not registered have not done so due to recently moving home or because they are just approaching voting age.

The council contacted 59,000 households to list everyone registered at their addresses in July as part of its duty to keep records up to date, but 15,000 are yet to respond.

Forms must be completed or residents risk their names not being included on the electoral register.

Mike Lovelady, the electoral registration officer for St Albans District Council, said: “If you have received a reminder to check the information held for your address or an individual invitation to register, you will need to take action.”

Householders can confirm or update details of eligible voters at their address online at www.householdresponse.com/stalbans or call 01727 819294.

Register online at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or alternatively complete the individual invitation via post.
