Primary school pupils held their very own mayoral question time in a bid to about democracy.

Mayor of St Albans City and District Council Mayor Mohammed Iqbal Zia was welcomed to Cunningham Hill Infant School on Monday, October 9.

The visit launched the school’s Local Democracy Week and children got the chance to ask him questions about his role in the community.

The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said: “I had a wonderful time at Cunningham Hill Infant School talking about local democracy and the importance of giving people the opportunity to express their views on issues that affect them.

I also spoke about my ceremonial role as Mayor of St Albans City and District, while the Macebearer dressed me in my formal robes and other regalia. The visit was rounded off with an interesting chat with school council members and I gave them all ‘I met the Mayor of St Albans’ badges.”

Events took place throughout the district to celebrate the initiative run by the Council of Europe to encourage people to take part in politics at a local level.

Competitions were held to get children thinking about democracy. Primary school pupils were asked to create a picture showing what they would do if they were Mayor for the day, while secondary school students were asked to write about their favourite aspect of their community.

District councillors were on-hand at different points in the week to discuss how women can get involved in politics, to discuss democratic issues affecting older people in the community and to answer questions from sixth formers.
