Campaigners are calling on authorities to hold consultations over the proposal of a new housing development.

Plans for a garden village made up of 4,000 – 8,000 in Hertsmere has been met with opposition from residents London Colney, a village where the boundary between Hertsmere Borough Council and St Albans City and District Council runs through it.

Resident Tony Lillico said: “What we have done is get the word out to most of the people in the ward, and support is growing.

“We want to help people to understand what is going on and how it will affect them.

“People have only found out about this by chance, I think it is really unclear as to what the process is for consulting outside the borough.

“To hold a public consultation without informing people about what is going on is a little bit crazy.”

The St Albans Liberal Democrats group have launched a petition on their website and already more than 150 people have signed up to this.

A cross-party public meeting is due to take place on November 5 in the London Colney Community Centre, Caledon Road.

People who live nearby have also been encouraged to take part in the consultation before November 30.

The Local Plan outlines ways for Hertsmere to cope with growth predicted over the next 15 years.

Hertsmere Borough Council’s Councillor Harvey Cohen responsible for planning and localism has stated that the plan is in the early stages.

He said: “Our ‘areas of search’ are just that – areas which have been identified as potentially suitable for development.

“They’re not allocated sites. They’re just on our list of possible places where homes and jobs could be located, but one thing is for sure – any growth that does happen will be contained within the borough.”

Under national changes proposed by the Boundary Commission, London Colney come under the Hertsmere constituency instead of St Albans as of 2022.
