More than 700 people signed a petition to stop the closure of two hospital wards in May. Hertfordshire’s NHS Trust announced it would close the Sopwell and Langton wards at St Albans City Hospital due to cuts. The closure of the wards, which provide 24-hour nursing services, saw campaigners argue they provide important care for elderly people.

The MP for Hitchin and Harpenden announced that he would not seek re-election at this year’s general election. Peter Lilley said he had reached the decision not to run for re-election on June 8 “with some sadness”.

And the father of an 11-year-old girl from St Albans who died after falling from a water ride while on a school trip spoke for the first time since her death. Ivha Jannath, died after falling from the Splash Canyon ride at Drayton Manor, in Staffordshire.
