DRIVERS left searching for spaces in the area may find it easier after a survey designed to improve car parking is carried out.

St Albans City and District Council is running a consultation to ask how traffic problems in the city could be improved, as frustrated drivers look for somewhere to park.

The move could also help reduce pollution as drivers queue up to wait for a space.

At the moment, roads in the city centre can regularly become clogged up. which in turn, leads to increased levels of air pollution - a problem campaigners in St Albans are currently fighting to improve.

Peter Wares, a St Albans resident, believes it is “very good” that the council was consulting people.

He said: “The council need an input from local people.

“Too many times we see idling vehicles. I think the variable messaging signs (VMS) which let drivers know how many spaces are available in a car park always need to work.

“I would also encourage residents, visitors and shoppers to drive or cycle into town.

“And I think the situation will only get worse over the next ten years, as more parking places become designated electrical charging points.”

The survey, which the council is holding, will finish on January 26.

The council says it is currently “going through a new procurement process for parking services”.

This involves looking at the provision and management of car parks and on-street and off street enforcement.

A spokesman said: “We are looking to our customers to let us know what is important to them and whether there are ideas that we could incorporate into the new service.”
