An author who sustained life-threatening injuries while fighting in the Falklands war wants is searching for brave people in the community.

Simon Weston, who is also a former Welsh Guardsman, is calling on St Albans and Harpenden residents to nominate their Brave Britons as part of the The Amplifon Awards, which celebrates courageous people.

Mr Weston was injured when the ship Sir Galahad was destroyed during the Falklands conflict in 1982.

He endured years of re-constructive surgery, including 70 major operations or surgical procedures. His motivational story resulted in Simon being voted the Nation’s Favourite Hero in 2014.

Mr Weston, who will head the judging panel for the awards, said: “We all know someone who deserves recognition for their service to others, their country or community and we’re calling on the people of St Albans and Harpenden to nominate these amazing individuals.”

The categories include Service to their Country, which recognises former or current members of the armed forces.

Against all Odds will be awarded to a person who has achieved success in the face of adversity, and Charity Champion will acknowledge a volunteer, charity worker or fundraiser who has made a real difference.

There will also be an Active Ager category for an inspirational over 60, along with the Young Hero for under 18s.

The Hero Pet award will honour an admirable pet who has transformed the life of their owner.

The winners from each category will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Army and Navy Club on Tuesday, October 16.

The panel of judges will also choose an overall winner across all categories who will win a £1,000 trip to Italy.

The closing date for entries is Friday, August 3, and nominations can be made by visiting the Amplifon website: www.amplifon.com/web/uk/awards
