Watford are yet to open discussions with Barcelona about the possibility of retaining Gerard Deulofeu’s services, according to reports in Spain.

The winger impressed during the early stages of his Watford loan before suffering a stress fracture to his foot which has kept him out since the end of February.

He found the net in the 4-1 win over Chelsea and was a threatening presence in the opening throes of Javi Gracia’s reign, operating on the right wing and providing attacking impetus.

With Deulofeu certain he will not return to the Camp Nou in the summer, the door appears to be at least ajar for Watford to make a permanent move to secure his services at the end of the season.

However, the Spaniard’s injury means Watford are said to be reluctant in pushing ahead with negotiations for a permanent move and will not do so until the campaign is over.

Philippe Coutinho’s January arrival as well as the signing of Ousmane Dembele last summer means Barca are well stocked in Deulofeu’s preferred position.

The 24-year-old could well be seen as surplus to requirements at the Catalan club as they look to rebuild in the summer.

Should the Hornets look to pursue a deal to bring Deulofeu to Vicarage Road permanently, they are likely to face stiff competition for the four-time capped Spanish international.

Clubs in both England and his native Spain are believed to be circling and Sevilla, Valencia and Real Betis are all potential suitors.
