More than £6.5m of developers’ money has been spent on community and social projects in and around St Albans since 2012/13.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed where Section 106 money received by Hertfordshire County Council has been spent across the county.

Section 106 money is money from developers which is geared towards contributing to social or community infrastructure which has arisen as a result of development.

Within St Albans itself, £5.5m has been spent, with a large portion of that being spent on the Alban City School expansion. Just over £420,000 of Section 106 money has been spent on the expansion.

A sports hall and classroom project at Sandringham School received just shy of £260,000 of Section 106 money.

A cycle route through Verulamium Park from King Harry Lane to Abbey Mill Lane cost £450,000 in Section 106 money.

Other notable projects which was helped by more than £200,000 if section 106 money was the Prae Wood school expansion, the Samuel Ryder expansion, and a new scheme at Sandringham School.

Developers money has also been used on cycle route improvements in London Road, improved pedestrian crossing facilities in Lemsford Road, the s7 bus service between King Harry Lane/Verulam Estate and the railway station, and the addition of a pre school unit at Wainscott day nursery.

Meanwhile, £230,000 of section 106 money has been spent in Wheathampstead, more than £300,000 in Harpenden, just shy of £100,000 in Smallford, £3,000 in Redbourn, £4,700 in Park Street, around £40,000 in London Colney, and £5,000 in Bricket Wood.

Around £140,000 was spent on the High Beeches school expansion in Harpenden while money has also been invested in Harpenden Library, The Grove Infant and Nursery School and the upgrade of bus stops near The Common.

Around £57m has been spent across Hertfordshire since 2012/13.

The FOI was submitted by the chairman of Elstree & Borehamwood residents’ association, Andy Lewis.
