A folk concert this weekend will feature The Daria Kulesh Quartet, Ben Moss and New Roots finalists Bow by Bow.

Folk at the Maltings, on Friday (July 6) at 8pm, will have Daria Kulesh in the first appearance in St Albans with her new band, the Daria Kulesh Quartet. The concert was originally planned for March 2, but had to be postponed because of heavy snow.

Daria Kulesh, a Hertfordshire-based singer of Russian and Ingush heritage, has become established on the folk scene since her arrival from Russia and is now becoming increasingly known nationally. In her new band, Daria is joined by leading young acoustic guitarist Tristan Seume, pianist Marina Osman from Belarus and hammered dulcimer player, Kate Rouse.

Daria’s debut album, Eternal Child, received enthusiastic reviews and was followed by a second album Long Lost Home. This refers to Ingushetia, the Ingush Republic, or Ghalghai Mokh (Ghalghaiche), in the south of Russia, in the Caucasus Mountains and the Long Lost Home of Daria’s grandmother Fatima Akhrieva. Daria’s songs are inspired by its immense beauty, unique traditions and harrowing tragedy.

They include speaking out about the events of February 1944, when the Ingush along with the Chechens were deported from their homes on the orders of Joseph Stalin. This has won her awards in both the UK and Russia.

Ben Moss is well-versed in the folk traditions of England, and of his home county of Devon. Singing both traditional songs still relevant to our lives and original songs written to address the challenges we face in our society today, Ben accompanies himself on the fiddle, the melodeon, concertina and bouzouki. He is about to release his debut album, Lost Lands.

Bow by Bow consists of Noah Walton on fiddle and Alex Duncalf on cello. They have been busking on Oxford’s streets for five years, playing traditional English, Scottish, Irish and Breton tunes.
