FIREFIGHTERS led an 87-year-old man to safety after his flat went up in flames in the early hours of this morning.
Two St Albans pumps attended the ground floor flat, in The Ridgeway, Marshalswick, St Albans, just after midnight.
Crews arrived at the scene to find a woman outside and a distressed elderly man trying to get back into the burning property.
Using breathing apparatus, the crews tackled the blaze using a hose reel. The residents suffered smoke inhalation and were treated by paramedics at the scene.
The fire was extinguished by 1.45am. It is believed that the flat's smoke alarm was not working properly.
