SOLAR panels are likely to be installed on the roof of the district council offices in St Peter's Street, St Albans.

The authority, which is keen to reduce its carbon footprint, has submitted an application for panels to its own planning department.

What about value-for-money?

Solar Panels have incredibly long pay-back periods and can't in any way be regarded as value for money.

The District Auditor should be looking at surcharging councillors who took this decision for wasting our money.

There are far more efficient and effective (if less politically band-standing) ways of worshipping the carbon-footprint god such as insulating the roof better and turning down the air-conditioning.
