A HUGE panther-like cat was spotted on Saturday roaming across fields near Killigrew Junior School in Chiswell Green.
A member of the public claims to have seen the mystery black cat around the woodland by the school in West Avenue.
An extensive search of the area was carried out by police but no trace of the animal was found.
Tracy Mylotte, headteacher of the both the infant and junior school asked police to investigate the sightings today, but she does not believe there is such an animal.
She said: "We have had no reports from any of our children. If there was a panther we wouldn't have the children in school."
Nigel Hughes, who lives near the school, said this was not the first time the animal had been sighted.
He said: "My daughter spotted something like this on another occasion.
"She was riding her horse down Noke Lane when a huge cat-like animal came out of the bushes one evening and ran across the field."
He said the landlords of the Hollybush pub in Potters Crouch were also startled to see a huge black cat prowling the country lanes while they were out walking.
